Postcards From London: Team Visa Thanks You, The Fans

As the London 2012 Olympic Games draw to a close, we wanted to thank you for supporting the Team Visa athletes.  Over the next few days, we will continue to reflect on additional memories from London.

Your cheers helped Team Visa’s athletes  keep their drive and determination alive during their training and competition at London 2012.  But don’t take our word for it–hear directly from the athletes themselves what your cheers meant to them!

Thank you from Michael Phelps, winner of 6 medals at the London 2012 Olympic Games:

And more personal “thank yous” to fans  for the cheers from more Team Visa athletes:

Gold medal winning United States volleyball duo Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings

Australian gymnast Lauren Mitchell

Canadian bronze medal winning swimmer Brent Hayden

Canadian bronze medal winning diver Emilie Heymans

Russian bronze medal winning pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva

Postcards From London: The Story Behind Visa’s Real Time Congratulatory Ads

As a sponsor of the London 2012 Olympic Games and a company that has been involved with the Olympic movement for over 26 years, Visa is a passionate supporter of the athletes that compete.  To show out support of Team Visa, we have produced videos that introduced you to athletes like Chinese tennis player Li Na and even videos of athletes thanking you for your amazing cheers!

But during the Olympics, some of our most popular videos have been those Visa created in  real time to congratulate the athletes for their successes at the Olympic Games.  When Canadian diver Emilie Heymans competed and medaled in her first Olympics, we produced a video entitled “Congratulations Emilie” that ran on Canadian television within a matter of hours.  This was followed up by similar ads for medalists Michael Phelps and Mark Oldershaw, among others.

We sat down with Kevin Burke, CMO of Core Products at Visa, to understand the strategy and planning required to create the ads and get them broadcast on TV–all in 4-6 hours from the time a Team Visa athlete wins a medal.

Postcards From London: Celebrating Medals and Memories With Misty and Kerri

For Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings, the London 2012 Olympic Games meant another chance to play together, another chance to win close matches and another trip to the medal stand to be awarded their third straight Olympic gold medal in women’s beach volleyball.

The longtime partners and Team Visa athletes were able to relax and reflect on their many accomplishments, and Visa was on hand to capture their heartfelt reaction as they saw their very own real-time  “Congratulations” commercial for the first time:

Postcards From London: Looky Loo

Visa Ad in Holborn

As I’ve mentioned in previous postcards, Visa advertising is everywhere around London.  So it should come as little surprise that ad placements pop up at some places you might least expect them–like outside a public toilet.

The ad is located in a busy intersection in Holborn that gets a lot of foot traffic and  catches you eye as Usain Bolt appears to be running right at you.  And when you stop to consider the location, the text of the ad (“Flow Faster With Visa”) might make you chuckle when you pass this particular public loo.

Postcards From London: Visa Prepaid Cures Late Night Hunger

Visa London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic themed carsd

Tonight I found myself in the office craving a late night snack. After all, a chocolate honeycomb Crunchie counts as dinner, right?

And working at Visa, the vending machine (like increasingly more vending machines I encounter) takes contactless payments. While I had the option to pay with my mobile device, I decided to use the Visa Prepaid card we were given upon arrival in London. And what’s more fun than a Visa Prepaid card? One that features Wenlock, one of the two official mascots representing the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

In a matter of seconds, I avoided having to fish around for coins or find correct change and the 65p had been deducted from my Visa Prepaid card. Quick, easy and hunger-satisfying. Something tells me that this card is going to see more locations around London.

Congratulations Michael

Congrats Phelps - Go World

With last night’s gold medal win in the 4 x 200m freestyle relay, Michael Phelps upped his Olympic medal total to 19, besting the record of 18 career medals set by Russian gymnast Larissa Latynina in 1964. To celebrate this achievement, Visa has  introduced a new congratulatory advertisement celebrating 19-time Olympic medalist Phelps as the most decorated Olympian of all-time.  During the London 2012 Olympic Games, Phelps also captured a silver medal in the 4x100m freestyle relay and a silver medal in the 200m butterfly.

For the first time, Visa used actual video and photo cheers from fans in the U.S. that were submitted via Visa’s Cheer application on Facebook to star alongside Michael Phelps. The spot, entitled “Congratulations Michael,” aired on NBC following his win in the 4 x 200m freestyle relay. Leading up to the London 2012 Olympic Games, Phelps appeared in a number of Go World commercials including The Difference and 100th of a Second and was featured in more than 40 countries as part of Visa’s global marketing campaign.

Michael Phelps is a longstanding member of Visa’s global athlete support program, Team Visa. For the London 2012 Olympic Games, Visa is supporting 69 Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls (Team Visa London) along with national teams from more than 30 countries, providing financial support and valuable marketing exposure to assist them in pursuit of their Olympic and Paralympic goals.

Fans can continue to voice their support for Phelps, as well as other Team Visa athletes still competing at the London 2012 Olympic Games in the form of cheers by submitting photos, videos and text cheers, performing one-click cheers, and viewing content through Visa’s Cheer application on Facebook and by viewing and sharing video content on YouTube.

Postcards From London: Visa Wrapped Taxis Around Town

671A0237

Looking fast, even when standing still in the mid-day London traffic, Visa wrapped taxis seem to be everywhere for those looking for an above ground travel option. Whether you’re toting bulky bags of equipment across town (like me) or are weighed down with London 2012 souvenirs for friends and family back home, these roomy rides are a welcome sight.

And the slogan on the taxi seems especially appropriate for those looking to make it to events across the city in a timely fashion: “Visa Contactless Taxis Flow Faster”
