Postcards From London: Celebrating Medals and Memories With Misty and Kerri

For Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings, the London 2012 Olympic Games meant another chance to play together, another chance to win close matches and another trip to the medal stand to be awarded their third straight Olympic gold medal in women’s beach volleyball.

The longtime partners and Team Visa athletes were able to relax and reflect on their many accomplishments, and Visa was on hand to capture their heartfelt reaction as they saw their very own real-time  “Congratulations” commercial for the first time:

Postcards From London: The Business of Sposnorship

With the London 2012 Olympic Games well underway, Visa’s presence in London can be seen at every turn. There have been a lot of conversations about the role of sponsorship around an event of truly “Olympic” proportions. It takes a lot of planning and hard work across many teams at Visa–and the hard work is not going unrecognized. A report out today from Brand Interactive entitled “Winning Olympic Sponsors” puts Visa well ahead of other Olympic sponsors in public perception of our brand due to large part to successes in Visa TV spots and social media wins.

We caught up with Kevin Burke, Chief Marketing Officer of Core Products at Visa, to gain insight into the value that sponsorship of the Olympics offers to Visa and the details the are involved with supporting one of the largest global events in 2012.

One of Kevin’s favorite locations in London to see the great visuals that comprise the Visa sponsorship campaign is at Westfield Shopping Center, which hosts a great digital interactive billboard and stories-high images of Team Visa athletes.

So keep cheering for Team Visa athletes and congratulations to all those at Visa who have supported our sponsorship of the London 2012 Olympic Games!

Michael Phelps and Visa's Kevin Burke

With a gold medal as a member of the 4 X 100-meter medley relay team, Michael Phelps finished the London 2012 Olympic Games with six medals. Over four Olympics Phelps earned 22 medals, earning Phelps the distinction as the most decorated athlete in Olympic history.

Phelps sat down with Visa’s Kevin Burke (Chief Marketing Officer, Core Products) and several hundred members of the global media to discuss his retirement and plans for the future, as well as predictions around the future of swimming.  Relaxed and deservedly proud of his achievements, Phelps is looking forward to a well-deserved rest and reaffirmed his plans to retire from competition following the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Postcards From London: Visa Wrapped Taxis Around Town

Looking fast, even when standing still in the mid-day London traffic, Visa wrapped taxis seem to be everywhere for those looking for an above ground travel option. Whether you’re toting bulky bags of equipment across town (like me) or are weighed down with London 2012 souvenirs for friends and family back home, these roomy rides are a welcome sight.

And the slogan on the taxi seems especially appropriate for those looking to make it to events across the city in a timely fashion: “Visa Contactless Taxis Flow Faster”

“Visa Goes for the Gold”: An In-Depth Look at What It Means to Be an Olympic Sponsor

The Difference PR Still

While the London 2012 Olympic Games officially begin tomorrow, the work of a sponsor starts years in advance and involves thousands of people.  From the selection of Team Visa athletes, to the creation of a marketing campaign that resonates across the globe  like “Go World” or the development of mobile payment technologies with our partners at Samsung, the preparations have been long in coming and we’re excited to share our efforts with the world at the Olympic and Paralympic Games over the next several weeks.

An article in this week’s Sports Business Journal entitled “Visa Goes for the Gold” showcases many of the efforts that go into supporting sponsorship at an event the size and scope of the London 2012 Olympic Games.  Among the praise in the article was a survey conducted by Turnkey that ranked Olympic sponsors doing the best job activating around London 2012 and we’re proud that Visa was identified as number one.

People attending the Games will see Visa’s presence wherever they turn—with Visa advertising greeting travelers and Olympic fans at Heathrow Airport, around town on London buses and taxis, and on shopping bags featuring Team Visa athletes.

As the official payment system of the Olympic Games, we help make the Games happen ensuring Olympic fans enjoy fast, convenient and secure transactions for Olympic tickets, food and beverage and souvenirs using Visa mobile, contactless, credit, debit and prepaid products.

Throughout the course of the London 2012 Olympic Games, we will be bringing you exclusive interviews with Team Visa athletes, insightful data and trends, captivating images and behind the scenes access to events around London as the world cheers on athletes and comes together to celebrate the Olympic Games.
