Best Practices for Merchants: Leveraging the Original Transaction ID for Recurring Payment Management
Regions: U.S., Canada, AP, CEMEA, EU, LAC
View the guidance from Visa
Visa is providing guidance to support more effective management of recurring and other merchant initiated transactions (MITs) through the use of the Original Transaction ID (OTID). OTID establishes the link between the original cardholder initiated transaction (CIT) and subsequent MITs, enabling issuers to accurately identify individual subscriptions or services and validate customer consent. Visa strongly recommends the consistent use of OTID across both token based and primary account number (PAN) based transactions, as this supports improved authorization outcomes, reduces unnecessary declines and over blocking, and enables smoother subscription lifecycle management.

Regions: U.S., Canada, AP, CEMEA, EU, LAC
View guidance for a timely migration to Advanced Encryption Standard details
Visa is actively advancing its adoption of Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), aligning with the broader industry effort to enhance payment security. Visa is recommending that clients begin migrating to AES-based cryptography across their payment systems before the end of 2030. By 2031, all new use of Tripple Data Encryption Standard (TDES) for EMV© application cryptograms and PIN encryption should cease. During this transition, both AES and TDES will continue to be supported, helping provide flexibility as the industry moves toward stronger encryption standards. Clients and affected ecosystem participants should review their current cryptographic approach and explore resources to plan for AES readiness.
